How to Delete Message History and Attachments in iPhone/iPad

Message that you have sent and receive in Messages app can take up a lot of space on your iPhone or iPad, even run out of iCloud storage. If you have long conversations full of text messages, they might take up quite a bit of space. You can delete them to free up space. Learn more ways to free up iPhone storage.

Here shows how to free up space by deleting message history and iMessage attachments in iPhone/iPad.

Option 1: Automatically Clear Message History in Settings

With this option, it can automatically clear all attachments, images, video and audio files for all contacts who you have conversions with. To auto-clear message history, use these steps:

Step 1: Go to Settings > Message.

Step 2: Scroll down to tap Keep Message option under Message History.

Step 3: Choose an expiry period. You can choose to keep them for 30 Days if you prefer.

Option 2: Manually Delete Message Contents in Message app

With this option, you can choose to keep specific conversation contents if you prefer.

Step 1: Go to Message app, select a conversation that you don’t want to keep and look at it in the future.

Step 2: To delete an individual conversion, swipe left on it, tap Delete at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Step 3: To bulk delete multiple conversations at once, tap the Edit button on the main screen and select multiple conversations. Then tap Delete. This will delete all message contents and any attachments.

Option 3: Batch Delete iMessage Images and Attachments

If you want to keep text message, but don't want to keep images and attachments, you can following these steps.

Step 1: Open Message app, open a conversatiion.

Step 2: Tap on Delete iMessage attachments and images to see Detail in the top-right corner.

Click info icon to see detail

Step 3: You will see all images and attachments that you’ve sent or received in a conversion with that contact.

Step 4: To delete these photos and other attachments, simply tap and hold on a photo and then select More from the pop-up menu. Tap multiple images to select them and tap trash icon the to delete them at once.
