How to Reset Windows 10 Local User Password from Login Screen

So you forgot Windows 10 local user password and get stuck at the login screen, unable to sign in? Take it easy. It’s no big deal. You can simply reset Windows 10 local account password from the login screen. Here are two ways for your choices.


Option 1: Use a password reset disk

If you have ever created a password reset disk for the local user account in Windows 10, now the disk comes in handy. The disk will allow you to easily and quickly reset Windows 10 local user password from the login screen. Here is how.

Step 1: Connect the previously created password reset disk to the computer.

Step 2: Show the Reset password link at the Windows 10 login screen.

1. By default, when you do nothing on the login screen, the Reset Password link won't show up. Once you type in an incorrect password and try to sign in, the screen will display a message: The password is incorrect. Try again. Click the OK button under the message.

2. So, a Reset password link appears under the Password field on the login screen.

Step 3: Click the Reset Password link, so a Password Reset Wizard will pop up on the login screen. Just follow the Password Reset Wizard to reset your Windows 10 local user account password. That's so easy.

Option 2: Use an installation disk

If you did not create a password reset disk previously but you have an available Windows 10 installation disk, you also can reset your Windows 10 local user password from the login screen. Here is how.

Step 1: Boot the computer from a Windows 10 installation disk (USB or CD/DVD drive).

Step 2: After the computer boots up from an installation disk, the Windows Setup window should appear on the screen and what you need to do is pressing Shift + F10 on your keyboard to open a command prompt window.

Step 3: In the command prompt window that opens, type in the following commands. When each command is entered, press Enter key. This action will replace the Ease of Access utility at the login screen with cmd.exe.

Step 4: Next, type in wpeutil reboot and press Enter, and disconnect the installation disk from the computer, so that the computer will reboot from the hard drive and get into Windows 10.

Step 5: When you get to the Windows 10 logins screen, click the Ease of Access button in the lower right corner, so that a command prompt window will open.

Step 6: In the command prompt window that opens on the login screen, reset your Windows 10 local user password by typing in the command: net user <username> <NewPassword> and press Enter key. Replace <username> with your local user name, and replace <NewPassword> with your new password.

The above are the two ways you can reset Windows 10 local user password from the login screen. You can see that either way requires you to use a disk. However, if you forgot Windows 10 password without any disk available, you may have to use a third-party Windows password recovery tool to reset your Windows 10 password.
