Fix: Copy and Paste Doesn't Work in Virtual Machine

Copy/paste doesn't work in Virtual Machine? Cannot execute copy and paste file between guest operating system and host operating system? This article describes how to fix copy and paste problem.


Option 1: Install or Reinstall VMware Tools

Make sure you have installed VMware Tool.

If you have installed it, uninstall the vmware tools and install it again, here's how:

1. Click VM > Reinstall VMware Tools.

2. You are prompted to download VMware Tools, select Run setup.exe program to start installing.

Tip: If you do not see VMware Tools installing, press the Windows + R. Then, enter D:\setup.exe

(Where D: is your virtual CD-ROM drive).

3. Follow on-screen instruction to finish installation process. After done, restart the VMware.

Option 2: Enable Copy and Paste in VMware Workstation

Make copy and paste is enabled, here's how:

1. Go to click VM > Settings.

2. Click Option > Guest Isolation, then check Enable copy and paste options.

3. Click OK, and then restart your Virtual Machine.

Option 3: Enable Shared Folder

If the Copy&Paste still doesn’t work, don't panic! You can still have access to files on the host computer or on other virtual machines. If you want to provide that access, you must set up shared folders in your virtual machine app. Here's how:

1.In VMware Workstation, go to VM > Settings.

2. Click on Options > Shared Folders and select Always enable.

3. Then, click on Add to open Add Shared Wizard and click Next.

4. Click Browse to choose the folder location in the host.

5. Enter a name and location for the shared folder and click Next.

  • Name — This is the name that appears inside the virtual machine.
  • Host folder — The path on the host to the directory you want to share. Type in the full path or browse to the directory.

6. Select Enable This Shared attributes. Click Finish.

7. Then press Win+E to open Windows Explorer, you can see the Shared Folders under Network.

In a guest operating system, open File Explorer, select Network, and it is under the vmware-host computer.
