"I bought a new iPhone, set a password on it, and then promptly forgot what it was. And, I hadn’t yet set up Face ID. How can I unlock my iPhone without a passcode or Face ID?”

Unlock iPhone without Passcode or Face ID

If you forgot your passcode and Face ID doesn’t work, you’re not alone. This occurs frequently. Perhaps you can’t recall the passcode for an old iPhone you haven’t used in a while. Or maybe you suddenly forget your password that you have to enter many times a day. As it happens, Face ID is not available either. In any case, this post is here to help, showing you how to unlock any iPhone without a passcode or Face ID, including the iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.

Is it possible to unlock an iPhone without a passcode or Face ID?

Yes, it’s possible. You will have to factory reset your iPhone to erase all of its data and then set it up all over again. This is the only viable option to restore access to your iPhone in the event that you forget your passcode and Face ID does not work. If you expect to hack into an iPhone without a passcode and Face ID without erasing the data, it’s impossible. Even the FBI is unable to do so due to iOS’s robust encryption technology.

Now that you know what will be involved, we’ll go through five methods for unlocking your iPhone without a passcode or Face ID, with or without a computer. Let's get started.

Method 1: Unlock iPhone passcode using iTunes or Finder

In many cases, unlocking an iPhone without a passcode or Face ID requires the use of a computer. So the first method we'll cover is to connect your iPhone to your computer and then use iTunes or Finder to restore it to factory Settings.

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your computer via a USB cable.

Step 2: Force the iPhone to boot into recovery mode. To do this, first, press and release the Volume Up button, then press and release the Volume Down button, and finally press and hold the Side button until the iPhone enters recovery mode.

Step 3: Open iTunes if you’re using a PC, or Finder if you’re using a Mac. iTunes or Finder will immediately recognize the connected iPhone and pop up a dialog box that allows you to choose to update or restore it.

Step 4: Select Restore, then Restore and Update, and then follow the on-screen instructions to restore the iPhone to its factory settings.

choose Restore

Step 5: Keep the iPhone connected and wait a while until the restore is complete or you receive the message "Success, your iPhone has been unlocked".

Both of the techniques mentioned above require the use of a computer, but what if you don’t have or don’t want to use a computer? You can unlock your iPhone without a passcode, Face ID, or computer by using any of the three methods listed below. It’s worth noting that the methods below require that your iPhone has Find My iPhone enabled and is connected to a network.

Method 3: Unlock iPhone from the Lock Screen

If you wish to unlock your iPhone without a passcode, Face ID, or a computer, a straightforward way is to erase it by entering your Apple ID password on its lock screen. This method only works for iOS 15.2 or later.

Step 1: Keep entering any passcode on the iPhone’s lock screen until it says iPhone Unavailable and asks you to try again later. When you're able to, enter the passcode again until you see an Erase iPhone option in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Step 2: Tap Erase iPhone, tap Erase iPhone again to confirm, then enter the password for the Apple ID that is currently logged in on the iPhone.

Step 3: Your iPhone will be erased automatically, after which you can set it up again with a new passcode and Face ID.

Tip: For iOS 17 and later, enter an incorrect passcode five times in a row on your iPhone's lock screen, and you'll see the "Forgot Passcode" option in the lower right corner. Tap "Forgot Passcode," tap "Start iPhone Reset," and enter your Apple ID password to reset your iPhone.

Method 4: Unlock iPhone passcode with the Find My app

If your iPhone has Find My enabled and is sharing the same Apple ID with another iPhone or iPad, you can unlock it without a passcode, Face ID, or computer. All you need to do is erase your iPhone from the Find My app on another accessible iOS device.

Step 1: Go to another iOS device that shares the same Apple ID with your currently locked iPhone, and open the Find My app.

Step 2: In the Find My app, select Devices at the bottom. All devices linked to your Apple ID will be displayed here, including your locked iPhone you hope to unlock without a passcode and face ID. Tap the locked iPhone.

Step 3: Tap Erase This Device, tap Continue, then follow the on-screen prompts. This will erase all content and settings in your iPhone, including the passcode and face ID, and unlock your iPhone.

Method 5: Unlock iPhone passcode from iCloud.com

Finally, you can unlock your iPhone without a passcode or Face ID by accessing icloud.com in a browser on any accessible device. It should be noted that if you are having trouble logging into iCloud.com from a browser, this method will not work for you.

Step 1: Log in to iCloud.com in a browser on your computer or any other accessible device.

Open a browser on any available device, go to iCloud.com, and then sign in with your Apple ID. The Apple ID should be the same as the one you signed in to on your locked iPhone.

Sign in to iCloud.com

If your Apple ID has two-factor authentication enabled and you are signing in from a new or net-yet-trusted browser, a message with a verification code will be send to your iPhone and you have to enter the code before you can sign in.

enter verification code

Since you are currently unable to unlock your iPhone to view the verification code, click "Didn't get a verification code" and then click the "Text Me" option. A text message with the verification code will be sent to your iPhone.

choose Text Me

You may now check the received verification code on your iPhone screen without unlocking. Then, enter the code in the browser and you can successfully sign in to iCloud.

Step 2: After you're signed in to iCloud.com, scroll down and click the Find iPhone icon to access the iCloud Find My iPhone page.

click Find My

Step 3: On the iCloud Find Devices page, select the iPhone you need to unlock. When the action prompt appears, click Erase iPhone. This will erase all content and settings in the iPhone, including the passcode and face ID.

tap Erase iPhone

Step 4: When the erase is complete, your iPhone is unlocked and you can access it without any passcode or face ID. Of course, your iPhone is now like a brand-new device, and you have to re-set it up and create a new passcode and face ID.
